Parts and what they mean
- (a) Hole at site 1 ((a) स्थल 1 पर होल) — Thermal energy breaks a bond. The vacancy left behind has an effective charge +q and is called a hole.
- Free (conduction) electron, charge −q (मुक्त (चालन) इलेक्ट्रॉन, आवेश −q) — It moves independently through the crystal and gives the electron current Ie in an electric field.
- (b) Bound electron jumps from site 2 to site 1 ((b) बँधा इलेक्ट्रॉन स्थल 2 से स्थल 1 पर कूदता है) — An electron from a neighbouring covalent bond fills the vacancy. The free electron of (a) takes no part in this.
- Hole now at site 2 (अब होल स्थल 2 पर) — So the hole has apparently moved from 1 to 2. In a field holes drift towards the negative potential, giving the hole current Ih; total I = Ie + Ih.
- Covalent bond (सहसंयोजक आबंध) — Two shared electrons.
- +4 core (+4 क्रोड) — Si or Ge inner core.
