Parts and what they mean
- (a) Diode in equilibrium (V = 0) ((a) साम्य में डायोड (V = 0)) — p-region: it has gained electrons, so it is negative relative to the n-region.
- n-region (n-क्षेत्र) — It has lost electrons, so it is positive relative to the p-region.
- Depletion region (अवक्षय क्षेत्र) — The potential changes only across this region.
- Fixed ions (स्थिर आयन) — − acceptor ions on the p-side, + donor ions on the n-side.
- (b) Potential V across the junction ((b) संधि के आर-पार विभव V) — Rises from the p-side to the n-side across the depletion region.
- Barrier potential V0 (विभव प्राचीर V0) — Its polarity opposes further flow of electrons from n to p (and holes from p to n), so equilibrium is kept. Typically about 0.7 V for Si and 0.3 V for Ge (not given in NCERT; for intuition).
- Axes (अक्ष) — Potential V against position x.
- Holes (होल) — Majority carriers on the p-side.
- Electrons (इलेक्ट्रॉन) — Majority carriers on the n-side.
