Parts and what they mean
- Glass rod rubbed with silk (रेशम से रगड़ी काँच की छड़) — By convention its charge is called positive (+): the glass loses some electrons to the silk.
- Plastic rod rubbed with fur (फर से रगड़ी प्लास्टिक की छड़) — Its charge is negative (−): the plastic gains electrons from the fur.
- Insulating (nylon/silk) thread (विद्युतरोधी धागा) — The rod hangs freely so even a small force makes it swing; an insulating thread keeps the charge from leaking away.
- Repulsion (like charges) (प्रतिकर्षण (सजातीय आवेश)) — Two positively charged glass rods push each other apart: like charges repel.
- Attraction (unlike charges) (आकर्षण (विजातीय आवेश)) — A positive glass rod and a negative plastic rod pull towards each other: unlike charges attract.
