Parts and their functions
- Chain B (श्रृंखला B) — One of the two short polypeptide chains of insulin.
- Chain A (श्रृंखला A) — The other short polypeptide chain of insulin.
- C peptide (C पेप्टाइड) — An extra stretch present in pro-insulin. It is NOT present in mature insulin — it is removed during maturation.
- C peptide removed (C पेप्टाइड हटाया गया) — Processing cuts out the C peptide, giving the mature, functional hormone.
- Disulphide bridges (डाइसल्फाइड बंध) — S–S bonds that link chain A and chain B together.
Steps
- Insulin is made as a pro-hormone, pro-insulin: chains A and B plus an extra C peptide.
- During maturation the C peptide is removed.
- Mature insulin = chain A + chain B linked by disulphide bridges.
