Parts and their functions
- Bone marrow (अस्थि मज्जा) — Primary lymphoid organ: the main organ where all blood cells, including lymphocytes, are produced.
- Thymus (थाइमस) — Primary lymphoid organ: a lobed organ near the heart, beneath the breastbone. Large at birth, very small by puberty. With bone marrow, it provides the micro-environment for T-lymphocytes to develop and mature.
- Spleen (प्लीहा) — Secondary lymphoid organ: large, bean-shaped; mainly lymphocytes and phagocytes. Filters blood by trapping blood-borne microbes; has a large reservoir of erythrocytes.
- Lymph nodes (लसीका पर्व (लिम्फ नोड)) — Secondary lymphoid organs: small solid structures along the lymphatic system. They trap microbes/antigens in lymph and tissue fluid, which activates lymphocytes there.
- Tonsils (टॉन्सिल) — Secondary lymphoid organ in the throat, where lymphocytes meet antigens.
- Peyer's patches (पेयर पैच) — Secondary lymphoid tissue in the small intestine.
- Appendix (परिशेषिका (एपेंडिक्स)) — Listed by NCERT among the secondary lymphoid organs.
- Lymphatic vessels (लसीका वाहिकाएँ) — Carry lymph; lymph nodes sit at different points along them.
