Parts and their functions
- Opioids (morphine, heroin) (ओपिऑइड (मॉर्फ़ीन, हेरोइन)) — Bind opioid receptors in the CNS and gastrointestinal tract. Morphine comes from the latex of the poppy Papaver somniferum; heroin (smack) = diacetylmorphine, made by acetylation of morphine — a depressant that slows body functions.
- Cannabinoids (कैनाबिनॉइड) — Interact with cannabinoid receptors mainly in the brain. From the inflorescences of Cannabis sativa → marijuana, hashish, charas, ganja. Taken by inhalation or orally; known for effects on the cardiovascular system.
- Coca alkaloid (cocaine) (कोका ऐल्केलॉइड (कोकेन)) — From the coca plant Erythroxylum coca (South America). Interferes with transport of the neurotransmitter dopamine; strong CNS stimulant (euphoria, more energy); excess causes hallucinations. Usually snorted.
- Hallucinogenic plants (विभ्रमकारी पौधे) — Atropa belladona and Datura are well-known plants with hallucinogenic properties.
