NCERT Fig 5.16 · Class 12 Biology · Chapter 5 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Chromosomes carrying VNTRs (VNTR वाले गुणसूत्र) — DNA is isolated from any tissue — blood, hair follicle, skin, bone, saliva, sperm.
- VNTR (mini-satellite) (VNTR (मिनी-सैटेलाइट)) — Short sequence repeated in tandem; copy number varies, size 0.1–20 kb.
- Autoradiogram (ऑटोरेडियोग्राम) — After restriction digestion, electrophoresis, blotting and hybridisation with a labelled VNTR probe.
- Band pattern (पट्टी पैटर्न) — Bands of different sizes — a pattern unique to each person.
- Monozygotic twins (एकयुग्मजी जुड़वाँ) — The only people with the same pattern.
Steps
- Different people carry different numbers of VNTR repeats.
- Cut, separate, blot, probe → band pattern on the autoradiogram.
- Every person differs except identical twins.
