Parts and their functions
- Alveoli (in a mammary lobe) (कूपिकाएँ (स्तन पालि में)) — Each breast has 15–20 mammary lobes containing clusters of alveoli. Alveolar cells secrete milk, stored in their cavities (lumens).
- Mammary tubule (स्तन नलिका) — The alveoli open into mammary tubules.
- Mammary duct (स्तन वाहिनी) — The tubules of each lobe join to form a mammary duct.
- Mammary ampulla (स्तन तुंबिका) — Several mammary ducts join to form a wider mammary ampulla.
- Lactiferous duct (दुग्ध वाहिनी) — The ampulla is connected to the lactiferous duct, through which milk is sucked out.
- Nipple (चूचुक) — The lactiferous ducts open to the outside through the nipple.
- Areola (स्तन परिवेश (एरिओला)) — Pigmented circular area of skin around the nipple.
- Fat (adipose tissue) (वसा ऊतक) — The breast has glandular tissue and a variable amount of fat.
- Pectoral muscle (अंसीय पेशी) — Chest muscle on which the breast rests (shown for position).
- Rib (पसली) — Ribs of the chest wall (shown for position).
