Electrolysis of waterजल का विद्युत अपघटन
NCERT Fig 1.6 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Plastic mug (प्लास्टिक मग) — Two holes at the base, fitted with rubber stoppers that hold carbon electrodes.
- Water with a few drops of dilute sulphuric acid (जल + कुछ बूँदें तनु सल्फ़्यूरिक अम्ल) — The acid helps water conduct electricity.
- Cathode (−) (कैथोड (−)) — Connected to the negative terminal. Hydrogen gas is collected here.
- Anode (+) (ऐनोड (+)) — Connected to the positive terminal. Oxygen gas is collected here.
- Hydrogen gas (double volume) (हाइड्रोजन गैस (दोगुना आयतन)) — Volume of H₂ is double that of O₂. Test: burns with a pop sound.
- Oxygen gas (ऑक्सीजन गैस) — Test: a glowing splinter/candle burns brighter.
- Gas bubbles (गैस के बुलबुले) — Bubbles form at both electrodes and displace water from the test tubes.
- Rubber stoppers (रबर डाट) — Hold the carbon electrodes in the holes of the mug.
- 6 volt battery (6 वोल्ट बैटरी) — Supplies electricity — energy for this decomposition reaction: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂.
