Parts and their functions
- Fore-brain (cerebrum) (अग्रमस्तिष्क (प्रमस्तिष्क)) — Main thinking part: sensory areas (hearing, smell, sight), association areas, motor areas for voluntary muscles; hunger centre.
- Hypothalamus (हाइपोथैलमस) — Part of the fore-brain; releases releasing hormones that make the pituitary release hormones.
- Pituitary gland (पीयूष ग्रंथि) — Endocrine gland below the brain; secretes growth hormone and others.
- Mid-brain (मध्यमस्तिष्क) — Controls many involuntary actions (with the hind-brain).
- Pons (पोंस) — Part of the hind-brain; involved in involuntary actions such as breathing.
- Cerebellum (अनुमस्तिष्क) — Hind-brain; precision of voluntary actions, posture and balance (walking straight, riding a bicycle).
- Medulla (मेडुला) — Hind-brain; controls involuntary actions like blood pressure, salivation and vomiting.
- Spinal cord (मेरुरज्जु) — Continues from the medulla; carries messages and forms reflex arcs. Brain + spinal cord = CNS.
