Parts and their functions

• China dish (चीनी मिट्टी की प्याली) — Holds the mixture of camphor and common salt (or sand).
• Mixture (मिश्रण) — Camphor sublimes; salt/sand does not, so it stays behind in the dish.
• Gentle heating (धीमी ऊष्मा) — Solid camphor changes directly into vapour without melting.
• Inverted funnel (उलटी कीप) — Its walls are cool, so vapour condenses back directly into solid.
• Cotton plug (रुई का डाट) — Stops vapour escaping from the stem.
• Sublimate (ऊर्ध्वपातज) — Pure solid camphor collected on the funnel walls. Other sublimable solids: naphthalene, ammonium chloride, iodine.
