Parts and their functions
- Gas jar with cover (ढक्कन वाला गैस जार) — A closed jar keeps the air inside saturated with solvent vapour so the paper does not dry out.
- Chromatography (or filter) paper strip (वर्णलेखन (या फ़िल्टर) पेपर पट्टी) — Water rises up the paper and carries the dyes with it.
- Pencil line, 2 cm from bottom (पेंसिल रेखा, नीचे से 2 cm) — Drawn in pencil because graphite does not dissolve and move.
- Ink spot (स्याही का धब्बा) — Must stay ABOVE the water level, otherwise the ink would dissolve into the water instead of climbing.
- Solvent (water) (विलायक (जल)) — Moves up the paper by capillary action.
- Separated colours (अलग हुए रंग) — Each dye moves at its own speed (different attraction for water and paper), so they separate — black ink is a mixture.
