Torque (moment of force) τ = r × Fबल आघूर्ण τ = r × F
NCERT Fig 6.17 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Origin / axis O (मूल बिंदु / अक्ष O) — Torque is always taken about a point (or axis).
- Position vector r (स्थिति सदिश r) — From O to the point where F acts.
- Force F (बल F) — Only its component perpendicular to r turns the body.
- Angle θ between r and F (r और F के बीच कोण θ) — θ = 0 or 180° (force along r) ⇒ no torque.
- Moment arm r⊥ (आघूर्ण भुजा r⊥) — Perpendicular distance from O to the line of action: τ = r⊥F. Unit N m.
- Direction of τ (τ की दिशा) — Perpendicular to the plane of r and F (right-hand rule): here out of the page — anticlockwise turning.
