Parts and what they mean
- Sample space S (प्रतिदर्श समष्टि S) — All possible outcomes; P(S) = 1.
- Event A (घटना A) — Outcomes favourable to A. P(A) ≥ 0.
- Event B (घटना B) — Outcomes favourable to B.
- A ∩ B ("A and B") (A ∩ B ("A और B")) — Common outcomes. Counted twice in P(A) + P(B), so subtract once. If A ∩ B = φ, A and B are mutually exclusive.
- Neither A nor B (न A, न B) — A′ ∩ B′ = (A ∪ B)′, so P = 1 − P(A ∪ B).
- Addition rule (योग नियम) — P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A ∩ B); for mutually exclusive events P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B).
