Parts and their functions
- High E⊖ couples (उच्च E⊖ युग्म) — F₂, MnO₄⁻, Cl₂ have large positive E⊖: they are easily reduced, so they are strong oxidising agents. F₂ is the strongest.
- Middle couples (मध्य युग्म) — A species can oxidise anything below it: Fe³⁺ (0.77) oxidises I⁻ (0.54) and Cu (0.34), but not Ag (0.80).
- Standard hydrogen electrode (मानक हाइड्रोजन इलेक्ट्रोड) — The reference: Pt, H₂ (1 bar) | H⁺ (1 M), assigned E⊖ = 0.00 V. Metals below it displace H₂ from dilute acids.
- Low E⊖ couples (निम्न E⊖ युग्म) — Li, Mg (very negative E⊖) lose electrons easily — they are strong reducing agents. Li is the strongest here.
- Oxidising power (ऑक्सीकरण क्षमता) — Going up the table, the oxidised form (left side) becomes a stronger oxidising agent.
- Reducing power (अपचायक क्षमता) — Going down, the reduced form (metal or ion on the right) becomes a stronger reducing agent: Li > Mg > Zn > Fe > Cu > Ag.
