Parts and their functions
- Zinc anode (ज़िंक ऐनोड) — Oxidation happens here: Zn → Zn²⁺ + 2e⁻. Electrons pile up on zinc, so it is the negative electrode.
- Copper cathode (कॉपर कैथोड) — Reduction happens here: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu. It is the positive electrode; copper deposits on it.
- Salt bridge (लवण सेतु) — An inverted U-tube with KCl or KNO₃ in agar. It completes the circuit through ion movement and keeps both solutions electrically neutral.
- Electron flow (इलेक्ट्रॉन प्रवाह) — Electrons flow through the outer wire from zinc to copper; conventional current flows from copper to zinc.
- Voltmeter (वोल्टमीटर) — Reads the cell potential: E⊖cell = E⊖(Cu²⁺/Cu) − E⊖(Zn²⁺/Zn) = 0.34 − (−0.76) = 1.10 V when both solutions are 1 M.
