Parts and their functions
- Glass discharge tube (low pressure) (काँच की विसर्जन नलिका (निम्न दाब)) — Air is pumped out; current flows through the gas only at very low pressure and very high voltage.
- Cathode (negative electrode) (कैथोड (ऋण इलेक्ट्रोड)) — Cathode rays start here and travel towards the anode — they are streams of negatively charged particles (electrons).
- Perforated anode (positive) (छिद्रित ऐनोड (धन)) — A hole in the anode lets a narrow beam of cathode rays pass through to the far end.
- Cathode rays (कैथोड किरणें) — Travel in straight lines (no field), are deflected by electric/magnetic fields like negative charges; properties do not depend on the electrode material or the gas.
- Zinc sulphide coated screen (ज़िंक सल्फ़ाइड लेपित पर्दा) — Cathode rays are invisible; the fluorescent ZnS coating glows where they strike (like old TV picture tubes).
- High voltage source (उच्च वोल्टता स्रोत) — Thousands of volts are applied between cathode and anode.
- To vacuum pump (निर्वात पंप की ओर) — Pumps out the gas to keep the pressure very low.
