Parts and their functions
- Nasal chamber (नासा कक्ष) — Reached through nostrils and nasal passage; filters and warms air.
- Pharynx (ग्रसनी) — Common passage for food and air.
- Larynx (कंठ) — Cartilaginous box for sound production — the sound box.
- Epiglottis (घाँटी ढक्कन) — Thin elastic cartilaginous flap that covers the glottis during swallowing.
- Trachea (श्वासनली) — Straight tube to mid-thorax; supported by incomplete cartilaginous rings; divides at the 5th thoracic vertebra.
- Bronchi and bronchioles (श्वसनी और श्वसनिकाएँ) — Primary → secondary → tertiary bronchi → very thin terminal bronchioles.
- Alveoli (कूपिकाएँ) — Thin, vascularised bags — the primary sites of gas exchange.
- Lungs (फेफड़े) — Branching network of bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
- Pleura (फुप्फुसावरण) — Double layer with pleural fluid; reduces friction on the lung surface.
- Diaphragm (डायाफ्राम) — Dome-shaped muscle forming the floor of the air-tight thoracic chamber.
