Organisms use O₂ to indirectly break down simple molecules like glucose, amino acids and fatty acids to derive energy, and release harmful CO₂. The exchange of O₂ from the atmosphere with CO₂ produced by cells is breathing, commonly called respiration. O₂ lekar energy, CO₂ bahar. 14.1Respiratory organsश्वसन अंगRespiratory organs

Mechanisms of breathing vary with habitat and level of organisation. Lower invertebrates like sponges, coelenterates and flatworms exchange O₂ and CO₂ by simple diffusion over the entire body surface. Earthworms use their moist cuticle; insects have a network of tubes — tracheal tubes — to transport air within the body. Special vascularised structures called gills (branchial respiration) are used by most aquatic arthropods and molluscs, whereas vascularised bags called lungs (pulmonary respiration) are used by terrestrial forms. Among vertebrates, fishes use gills; reptiles, birds and mammals respire through lungs; amphibians like frogs can respire through their moist skin (cutaneous respiration) as well as lungs. Sponges, coelenterates, flatworms — body surface diffusion. A pair of external nostrils opens above the upper lips into the nasal chamber through the nasal passage. The nasal chamber opens into the pharynx, a common passage for food and air. The pharynx opens through the larynx into the trachea. The larynx is a cartilaginous box that helps in sound production — the sound box. During swallowing the glottis is covered by a thin elastic cartilaginous flap, the epiglottis, to prevent food entering the larynx. The trachea is a straight tube extending to the mid-thoracic cavity, which divides at the level of the 5th thoracic vertebra into right and left primary bronchi. Each bronchus undergoes repeated divisions into secondary and tertiary bronchi and bronchioles, ending in very thin terminal bronchioles. The trachea, primary, secondary and tertiary bronchi and initial bronchioles are supported by incomplete cartilaginous rings. Each terminal bronchiole gives rise to many very thin, irregular-walled, vascularised bag-like structures — alveoli. The branching network of bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli forms the lungs. We have two lungs covered by a double-layered pleura with pleural fluid between them, which reduces friction on the lung surface. The outer pleural membrane is in close contact with the thoracic lining and the inner one with the lung surface. The part from the external nostrils up to the terminal bronchioles is the conducting part — it transports air to the alveoli, clears it of foreign particles, humidifies it and brings it to body temperature. The alveoli and their ducts form the respiratory or exchange part, the site of actual diffusion of O₂ and CO₂ between blood and atmospheric air. The lungs lie in the air-tight thoracic chamber, formed dorsally by the vertebral column, ventrally by the sternum, laterally by the ribs and on the lower side by the dome-shaped diaphragm; any change in thoracic volume is reflected in the lung (pulmonary) cavity — essential for breathing, as pulmonary volume cannot be altered directly. Pleura (do parat + fluid) friction kam. Breathing ka mechanism

Breathing has two stages: inspiration (atmospheric air drawn in) and expiration (alveolar air released). Air moves because of a pressure gradient between the lungs and the atmosphere. Inspiration occurs when intra-pulmonary pressure is less than atmospheric (negative pressure); expiration when it is higher. The diaphragm and the external and internal intercostal muscles between the ribs create these gradients. Inspiration starts with contraction of the diaphragm, which increases thoracic volume in the antero-posterior axis; contraction of external intercostal muscles lifts the ribs and sternum, increasing volume in the dorso-ventral axis. The overall increase in thoracic volume causes a similar increase in pulmonary volume, decreasing intra-pulmonary pressure below atmospheric and forcing air in. Relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostals returns them to normal positions, reducing thoracic and pulmonary volume, raising intra-pulmonary pressure slightly above atmospheric and expelling air — expiration. Additional abdominal muscles can increase the strength of inspiration and expiration. A healthy human breathes 12–16 times/minute; a spirometer measures the volumes involved. Inspiration, expiration. Pressure gradient. Gas exchange

Alveoli are the primary sites of gas exchange; exchange also occurs between blood and tissues. O₂ and CO₂ are exchanged by simple diffusion based on pressure/concentration gradients. Solubility of the gases and the thickness of the membranes also matter. The pressure contributed by an individual gas in a mixture is its partial pressure — pO₂ and pCO₂. There is a gradient for O₂ from alveoli to blood and from blood to tissues, and the opposite for CO₂. As the solubility of CO₂ is 20–25 times higher than O₂, much more CO₂ diffuses per unit difference in partial pressure. The diffusion membrane has three major layers — the thin squamous epithelium of alveoli, the endothelium of alveolar capillaries and the basement substance between them — but its total thickness is much less than a millimetre, so all factors favour diffusion of O₂ from alveoli to tissues and of CO₂ from tissues to alveoli. Blood is the medium of transport. About 97% of O₂ is transported by RBCs; the remaining 3% is carried dissolved in plasma. 14.4.1Transport of oxygenऑक्सीजन का परिवहनO₂ transport

Haemoglobin is a red, iron-containing pigment in RBCs. O₂ binds it reversibly to form oxyhaemoglobin; each haemoglobin molecule can carry a maximum of four O₂ molecules. Binding depends primarily on pO₂; pCO₂, H⁺ concentration and temperature also interfere. Plotting percentage saturation of haemoglobin with O₂ against pO₂ gives a sigmoid curve — the oxygen dissociation curve — useful to study the effect of pCO₂, H⁺ etc. on binding. In the alveoli — high pO₂, low pCO₂, lesser H⁺ and lower temperature — conditions favour formation of oxyhaemoglobin; in the tissues — low pO₂, high pCO₂, high H⁺ and higher temperature — they favour dissociation of O₂. Every 100 mL of oxygenated blood can deliver about 5 mL of O₂ to the tissues under normal physiological conditions. 14.4.2Transport of carbon dioxideकार्बन डाइऑक्साइड का परिवहनCO₂ transport

CO₂ is carried by haemoglobin as carbamino-haemoglobin (about 20–25%). This binding depends on pCO₂; pO₂ also affects it. In the tissues, where pCO₂ is high and pO₂ low, more CO₂ binds; in the alveoli, where pCO₂ is low and pO₂ high, CO₂ dissociates from carbamino-haemoglobin. RBCs contain a very high concentration of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (also present in small amounts in plasma), which catalyses both directions: CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃ ⇌ HCO₃⁻ + H⁺. At the tissues, CO₂ diffuses into blood (RBCs and plasma) and forms HCO₃⁻ and H⁺; at the alveoli, where pCO₂ is low, the reaction runs the opposite way, forming CO₂ and H₂O. CO₂ trapped as bicarbonate at the tissue level and transported to the alveoli is released as CO₂. Every 100 mL of deoxygenated blood delivers about 4 mL of CO₂ to the alveoli.CO₂ हीमोग्लोबिन द्वारा कार्बामिनो-हीमोग्लोबिन के रूप में (लगभग 20–25%)। CO₂ → carbamino-Hb (20–25%). 14.5Regulation of respirationश्वसन का नियमनRespiration ka regulation

Humans can maintain and moderate the respiratory rhythm to suit the body’s demands — done by the neural system. The respiratory rhythm centre in the medulla is primarily responsible. The pneumotaxic centre in the pons can moderate the rhythm centre; its neural signal can reduce the duration of inspiration and thereby alter the respiratory rate. A chemosensitive area adjacent to the rhythm centre is highly sensitive to CO₂ and hydrogen ions; an increase in these activates it, which signals the rhythm centre to adjust the respiratory process so they can be eliminated. Receptors in the aortic arch and carotid artery also recognise changes in CO₂ and H⁺ and send signals to the rhythm centre. The role of oxygen in regulating the rhythm is quite insignificant. Neural: medulla ka respiratory rhythm centre; pons ka pneumotaxic centre (inspiration chhota → rate badle). 1. Define vital capacity. What is its significance?1. Vital capacity.
Vital capacity (VC) is the maximum volume of air a person can breathe in after a forced expiration (or breathe out after a forced inspiration): VC = ERV + TV + IRV (about 3.5–4.6 L). Significance: it measures the functional strength of the lungs and respiratory muscles; higher VC means more air (O₂) can be exchanged per breath — it is higher in athletes, mountain dwellers and wind-instrument players, and lower in lung disorders (asthma, emphysema, fibrosis), so it is used in clinical diagnosis with a spirometer. More fresh air replaces residual air, improving gas exchange. VC = ERV + TV + IRV. Lungs ki taakat ka maap; athletes mein zyada, lung disease mein kam; diagnosis mein use.
2. State the volume of air remaining in the lungs after a normal breathing.2. 2. Normal breathing ke baad bachi hawa.
After a normal expiration the air left in the lungs is the functional residual capacity (FRC) = ERV + RV = (1000–1100) + (1100–1200) ≈ 2100–2300 mL. FRC = ERV + RV ≈ 2100–2300 mL.
3. Diffusion of gases occurs in the alveolar region only and not in the other parts of respiratory system. Why?3. Sirf alveoli mein kyon?
Because only the alveoli have the features needed for diffusion: (1) a very thin diffusion membrane (alveolar squamous epithelium + basement substance + capillary endothelium, much less than 1 mm thick); (2) a rich network of blood capillaries; (3) a huge moist surface area; (4) a partial-pressure gradient for O₂ and CO₂ between alveolar air and blood. The rest of the tract (nose to terminal bronchioles) is the conducting part — thick-walled tubes, supported by cartilage, without such capillary contact — that only carries, filters, warms and moistens air. Alveoli: patli membrane, capillaries, badi nam surface, pressure gradient. 4. What are the major transport mechanisms for CO₂? Explain.4. 4. CO₂ transport.
(1) As bicarbonate (~70%) — in RBCs, carbonic anhydrase catalyses CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃ ⇌ HCO₃⁻ + H⁺; at the tissues (high pCO₂) bicarbonate forms; at the alveoli (low pCO₂) the reaction reverses and CO₂ is released. (2) As carbamino-haemoglobin (20–25%) — CO₂ binds haemoglobin; binding is favoured by high pCO₂ and low pO₂ in tissues and reversed by low pCO₂ and high pO₂ in alveoli. (3) Dissolved in plasma (~7%). Every 100 mL of deoxygenated blood delivers about 4 mL of CO₂ to the alveoli.(1) Bicarbonate 70% (carbonic anhydrase), carbamino-Hb 20–25%, plasma 7%. 100 mL → 4 mL CO₂.

6. Explain the process of inspiration under normal conditions.6. 6. Inspiration process.
Inspiration occurs when intra-pulmonary pressure becomes less than atmospheric. It begins with contraction of the diaphragm, which flattens and increases the volume of the thoracic chamber in the antero-posterior axis. At the same time the external intercostal muscles contract, lifting the ribs and sternum and increasing thoracic volume in the dorso-ventral axis. The rise in thoracic volume increases pulmonary volume, lowering intra-pulmonary pressure below atmospheric pressure, so air from outside moves into the lungs until the pressures equalise. Diaphragm contract (flat) + external intercostals (ribs upar) → volume ↑ → pressure < atmosphere → hawa andar.
7. How is respiration regulated?7. Regulation.
By the neural system. (1) The respiratory rhythm centre in the medulla sets the basic rhythm. (2) The pneumotaxic centre in the pons moderates it — its signals reduce the duration of inspiration and so alter the rate. (3) A chemosensitive area next to the rhythm centre is highly sensitive to CO₂ and H⁺; when they rise, it signals the rhythm centre to adjust breathing so they are eliminated. (4) Receptors in the aortic arch and carotid artery also detect changes in CO₂ and H⁺ and signal the rhythm centre. The role of O₂ in regulation is quite insignificant. Medulla rhythm centre; pons pneumotaxic; chemosensitive area (CO₂, H⁺); aortic/carotid receptors. O₂ ka role nagany.
8. What is the effect of pCO₂ on oxygen transport?8.
High pCO₂ decreases the binding of O₂ to haemoglobin and promotes its dissociation. In the tissues, where pCO₂ is high (with high H⁺ and temperature) and pO₂ low, O₂ is released from oxyhaemoglobin — the dissociation curve shifts to the right. In the alveoli, where pCO₂ is low and pO₂ high, formation of oxyhaemoglobin is favoured. Thus pCO₂ helps load O₂ in the lungs and unload it in the tissues. pCO₂ zyada → O₂ Hb se chhoot-ti (tissues); kam → oxyHb banta (lungs).
9. What happens to the respiratory process in a man going up a hill?9. Pahad par?
At high altitude atmospheric pressure and hence pO₂ are low, so less O₂ diffuses into the blood and haemoglobin is less saturated. The body responds by increasing the breathing rate and depth (and heart rate) to get more O₂; the person may feel breathlessness, headache, fatigue (altitude sickness / hypoxia). If he stays longer, the body acclimatises — e.g. more RBCs and haemoglobin are produced, improving O₂-carrying capacity. Upar pO₂ kam → saans tez, dil tez, hypoxia; dheere-dheere zyada RBC/Hb.
10. What is the site of gaseous exchange in an insect?10. Insect mein?
Insects have a network of tracheal tubes (tracheae) that open outside through spiracles and branch into fine tracheoles; gas exchange occurs directly between the tracheoles and the body cells (tissues). Tracheal tubes / tracheoles se seedha cells tak.
11. Define oxygen dissociation curve. Can you suggest any reason for its sigmoidal pattern?11. 11. ODC sigmoid kyon?
The oxygen dissociation curve is the curve obtained by plotting the percentage saturation of haemoglobin with O₂ against pO₂. It is sigmoid because of the cooperative binding of O₂ to haemoglobin: each Hb has four haem sites; binding of the first O₂ is difficult, but it changes the shape of Hb so the next O₂ molecules bind more easily, giving a steep middle part; near full saturation few sites remain, so the curve flattens. Hb % saturation vs pO₂. Sigmoid — cooperative binding (pehla O₂ mushkil, baaki aasaan, end mein flat).
12. Have you heard about hypoxia? Try to gather information about it, and discuss with your friends.12. 12. Hypoxia.
Hypoxia is a condition of inadequate O₂ supply to the body tissues. Causes: low pO₂ at high altitude (altitude sickness), lung diseases (asthma, emphysema, pneumonia), anaemia (less haemoglobin), poor circulation, or poisoning (e.g. carbon monoxide binds Hb). Symptoms: breathlessness, rapid breathing and heartbeat, headache, fatigue, confusion, bluish skin/lips (cyanosis). Treatment: oxygen supply, descending to lower altitude, treating the cause. Hypoxia = tissues ko kam O₂.
