Parts and their functions
- Hypothalamus (हाइपोथैलेमस) — Neuro-endocrine centre; releasing and inhibiting hormones.
- Neurosecretory cells (तंत्रिकास्रावी कोशिकाएँ) — Nuclei of the hypothalamus that produce hormones.
- Portal circulation (निवाहिका परिसंचरण) — Carries hypothalamic hormones to the anterior pituitary.
- Axons (neural link) (तंत्रिकाक्ष (तंत्रिकीय संबंध)) — Carry oxytocin and vasopressin down to the posterior pituitary.
- Pituitary stalk (पीयूष वृंत) — Connects the pituitary to the hypothalamus.
- Anterior pituitary (अग्र पीयूष) — Adenohypophysis (pars distalis + pars intermedia).
- Posterior pituitary (पश्च पीयूष) — Neurohypophysis (pars nervosa); stores and releases hypothalamic hormones.
- Anterior pituitary hormones (अग्र पीयूष हॉर्मोन) — GH, PRL, TSH, ACTH, LH, FSH (pars distalis); MSH (pars intermedia).
- Posterior pituitary hormones (पश्च पीयूष हॉर्मोन) — Oxytocin (uterine contraction, milk ejection) and vasopressin/ADH (water reabsorption).
