Organ aur organ system
Basic tissues organise into organs, which associate into organ systems — essential for efficient, well-coordinated activity of millions of cells. Each organ has one or more tissue types; e.g. our heart has all four — epithelial, connective, muscular and neural. The increasing complexity of organs and organ systems shows an evolutionary trend. Morphology = study of form/external features; in animals anatomy = study of internal organs. Here: the frog, representing vertebrates. Tissues → organs → organ systems. Heart mein chaaron tissues — epithelial, connective, muscular, neural. Complexity badhna = evolutionary trend. Morphology = bahari roop; anatomy = andar ke organs. Example: mendhak.
Frogs
Frogs live on land and in fresh water — class Amphibia, phylum Chordata. Common Indian species: Rana tigrina (Indian bullfrog). They are cold-blooded (poikilotherms) — body temperature varies with the environment. They change colour to hide from enemies (camouflage; NCERT calls this protective coloration mimicry). In peak summer and winter they shelter in deep burrows — summer sleep (aestivation) and winter sleep (hibernation). 3D frog3Dमेंढक थल और अलवण जल दोनों में रहते हैं — वर्ग एम्फ़ीबिया, संघ कॉर्डेटा। 3D मेंढक3DMendhak zameen + meetha paani — Amphibia, Chordata. India mein Rana tigrina. Cold-blooded. Rang badalte (camouflage; NCERT ise mimicry kehti). Garmi/sardi mein bil mein — aestivation aur hibernation. 3D frog3D
Morphology
Skin smooth and slippery due to mucus, always kept moist; dorsal side olive green with dark irregular spots, ventral side uniformly pale yellow. The frog never drinks water but absorbs it through the skin. Body = head and trunk — no neck, no tail. A pair of nostrils above the mouth; bulging eyes covered by a nictitating membrane (protects them in water); a membranous tympanum (ear) on either side receives sound. Limbs help in swimming, walking, leaping and burrowing: fore limbs end in four digits, larger muscular hind limbs in five webbed digits. Skin mucus se chikni, geeli; upar hari + dhabbe, neeche peeli. Mendhak paani peeta nahi, skin se sokhta. Head + trunk — neck, tail nahi. Nostrils, aankhein + nictitating membrane, tympanum. Forelimb 4 ungli, hindlimb 5 jaaldaar.
Sexual dimorphism: males have sound-producing vocal sacs and a copulatory pad on the first digit of the fore limbs — absent in females. Sexual dimorphism: male mein vocal sacs aur pehli ungli par copulatory pad.
Anatomy
Digestive system — alimentary canal + digestive glands. The canal is short because frogs are carnivores (intestine reduced): mouth → buccal cavity → pharynx → oesophagus → stomach → intestine → rectum → cloaca. Liver secretes bile stored in the gall bladder; pancreas produces pancreatic juice. Food is caught by the bilobed tongue; HCl and gastric juices in the stomach → partly digested chyme → duodenum, which gets bile and pancreatic juice through a common bile duct. Bile emulsifies fat; pancreatic juice digests carbohydrates and proteins. Final digestion in the intestine; absorption by villi and microvilli; undigested waste leaves through the cloaca. Digestion — canal chhoti (carnivore): mouth → buccal → pharynx → oesophagus → stomach → intestine → rectum → cloaca. Liver → bile → gall bladder; pancreas. Bilobed tongue; HCl → chyme → duodenum (common bile duct). Bile fat emulsify; villi se absorption.
Respiration: in water the skin is the respiratory organ — cutaneous respiration (dissolved O₂ diffuses through the skin). On land the buccal cavity, skin and lungs are used; respiration by lungs = pulmonary respiration. The lungs are a pair of elongated pink sac-like structures in the thorax; air enters through the nostrils → buccal cavity → lungs. During aestivation and hibernation gaseous exchange is through the skin. Paani mein skin — cutaneous. Lungs gulabi thailiyan. Aestivation/hibernation mein skin se.
Circulation: well-developed closed blood vascular system plus a lymphatic system (lymph, lymph channels, lymph nodes). The muscular heart has three chambers — two atria and one ventricle — and is covered by pericardium. A triangular sinus venosus joins the right atrium and receives blood from the vena cava; the ventricle opens into a sac-like conus arteriosus on the ventral side. Arteries form the arterial system and veins the venous system. Special venous connections: liver–intestine = hepatic portal system; kidney–lower body = renal portal system. Blood = plasma + cells: RBCs (nucleated, with haemoglobin), WBCs and platelets. Heart 3 chambers — 2 atria, 1 ventricle, pericardium. Sinus venosus (right atrium se juda, vena cava se blood), conus arteriosus. Hepatic portal (liver–intestine), renal portal (kidney–neeche ka body). RBC nucleated. 3D heart3D
Excretion: a pair of compact, dark red, bean-like kidneys (posterior, on both sides of the vertebral column), ureters, cloaca and urinary bladder. Each kidney has many uriniferous tubules (nephrons). In males the ureters act as urinogenital ducts opening into the cloaca; in females ureters and oviducts open separately. The thin-walled urinary bladder lies ventral to the rectum and opens into the cloaca. The frog excretes urea — it is ureotelic. Kidneys (laal, sem jaise; nephrons), ureters, cloaca, urinary bladder. Male: ureter = urinogenital duct; female: ureter aur oviduct alag. Urea → ureotelic. 3D kidney3D
Control and coordination: neural system + endocrine glands. Prominent endocrine glands: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, pineal body, pancreatic islets, adrenals and gonads. Nervous system: central (brain, spinal cord), peripheral (cranial and spinal nerves) and autonomic (sympathetic, parasympathetic). Ten pairs of cranial nerves. The brain lies in a bony brain box (cranium): fore-brain (olfactory lobes, paired cerebral hemispheres, unpaired diencephalon), mid-brain (a pair of optic lobes), hind-brain (cerebellum, medulla oblongata). The medulla passes out through the foramen magnum into the spinal cord inside the vertebral column. Neural + endocrine. Glands: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, pineal, pancreatic islets, adrenals, gonads. CNS, PNS, autonomic. 10 jodi cranial nerves. Brain: fore (olfactory lobes, cerebral hemispheres, diencephalon), mid (optic lobes), hind (cerebellum, medulla). Medulla foramen magnum se spinal cord. 3D brain3D
Sense organs: touch (sensory papillae), taste (taste buds), smell (nasal epithelium), vision (eyes) and hearing (tympanum with internal ears). Only eyes and internal ears are well-organised; the rest are cellular aggregations around nerve endings. Eyes are a pair of spherical simple eyes in the orbits. No external ear — only the tympanum is visible; the ear serves hearing and balance. Touch (papillae), taste (taste buds), smell (nasal epithelium), eyes, ear (tympanum + internal ear). Eyes aur internal ear hi organised. Bahari kaan nahi; kaan = sunna + balance.
Reproduction: Male — a pair of yellowish ovoid testes attached to the upper kidneys by a double fold of peritoneum, the mesorchium; 10–12 vasa efferentia enter the kidney and open into Bidder’s canal, which communicates with the urinogenital duct opening into the cloaca (a small median chamber passing faeces, urine and sperms). Female — a pair of ovaries near the kidneys with no functional connection to them; a pair of oviducts open into the cloaca separately. A mature female lays 2500–3000 ova at a time. Fertilisation is external, in water; development has a larval stage, the tadpole, which undergoes metamorphosis into a frog. Male — testes (mesorchium), vasa efferentia → Bidder’s canal → urinogenital duct → cloaca. Female — ovaries (kidney se connection nahi), oviducts alag. 2500–3000 ande. External fertilisation; tadpole → metamorphosis.
Importance: frogs eat insects and protect crops; they are an important link in food chains and food webs, maintaining ecological balance; in some countries their muscular legs are eaten. Importance: keede khaakar fasal bachate; food chain/web ki kadi; kuch deshon mein taangein khaayi jaati.
