1.1Diversity in the living worldजीव जगत में विविधताLiving world mein diversity

Each different kind of plant, animal or organism is a species. About 1.7–1.8 million species are known and described — this number and variety of organisms on earth is biodiversity. New organisms are still being discovered. Har alag type ka paudha, jaanwar ya organism ek species hai. Lagbhag 1.7–1.8 million species jaani aur describe ki ja chuki hain — earth par organisms ki yeh sankhya aur variety biodiversity hai. Naye organisms aaj bhi mil rahe hain.

Local names change from place to place, which causes confusion. So scientists standardise names: nomenclature = giving a name; it needs correct identification (knowing which organism the name belongs to). Plants follow ICBN (International Code for Botanical Nomenclature); animals follow ICZN (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). Local naam jagah-jagah badalte hain, isse confusion hota hai. Isliye scientists naam standardise karte hain: nomenclature = naam dena; iske liye sahi identification zaroori hai (naam kis organism ka hai). Plants ke liye ICBN, animals ke liye ICZN code.

Binomial nomenclature (given by Carolus Linnaeus): every scientific name has two parts — the generic name (genus) and the specific epithet. Example: mango = Mangifera indica. Binomial nomenclature (Carolus Linnaeus ne di): har scientific naam ke do parts — generic name (genus) aur specific epithet. Classification = grouping things into convenient categories based on easily observable characters. These categories (dogs, mammals, wheat, plants …) are called taxa (singular taxon); taxa can be at very different levels. Taxonomy = the process of classification; its basic processes are characterisation, identification, classification and nomenclature. Classification = aasani se dikhne wale characters ke basis par cheezon ko convenient groups mein baantna. In groups (dogs, mammals, wheat, plants …) ko taxa (singular taxon) kehte hain; taxa alag-alag level ke ho sakte hain. Taxonomy = classification ka process; basic steps: characterisation, identification, classification aur nomenclature.

Modern taxonomy uses external and internal structure, cell structure, development and ecological information. Earliest classifications were based on uses (food, clothing, shelter). Systematics (Latin systema = systematic arrangement; Linnaeus wrote Systema Naturae) studies diversity and relationships, including identification, nomenclature, classification and evolutionary relationships. Modern taxonomy mein bahari-andar ki structure, cell structure, development aur ecological info use hoti hai. Sabse purane classifications uses (khana, kapda, ghar) par the. Systematics (Latin systema = systematic arrangement; Linnaeus ki book Systema Naturae) diversity aur relationships padhta hai — identification, nomenclature, classification aur evolutionary relationships sab.

1.2Taxonomic categoriesवर्गिकी संवर्गTaxonomic categories

Classification is a hierarchy of steps; each step is a rank or category (a unit of classification = taxon). All categories together make the taxonomic hierarchy. Common categories: kingdom, phylum/division, class, order, family, genus, species. Species is the lowest category for all organisms. Saari categories milkar taxonomic hierarchy banati hain: kingdom, phylum/division, class, order, family, genus, species. Species sabse neeche wali category hai.

1.2.1Speciesजाति (स्पीशीज़)Species

A group of individuals with fundamental similarities, distinguishable from closely related species by distinct morphological differences. In Mangifera indica, Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Panthera leo (lion), the second words are specific epithets. Humans: Homo sapiens. Mangifera indica, Solanum tuberosum (aalu), Panthera leo (sher) — doosre words specific epithets hain. Insaan: Homo sapiens.

Genus

A group of related species with more characters in common than with species of other genera. Potato and brinjal are different species of genus Solanum. Lion (P. leo), leopard (P. pardus) and tiger (P. tigris) belong to genus Panthera, which differs from genus Felis (cats). Related species ka group jinme doosre genera ki species se zyada common characters hon. Aalu aur baingan genus Solanum ki alag species hain. Sher, tendua aur baagh genus Panthera mein; billi genus Felis mein.

Family

A group of related genera, with fewer similarities than genus and species; plant families use both vegetative and reproductive features. Plants: Solanum, Petunia, Datura → family Solanaceae. Animals: Panthera + Felis → family Felidae; dogs are in Canidae. Related genera ka group, genus aur species se kam similarities; plant families mein vegetative aur reproductive dono features. Plants: Solanum, Petunia, Datura → Solanaceae. Animals: Panthera + Felis → Felidae; kutte Canidae mein.

Order

An assemblage of families showing a few similar characters. Plant families Convolvulaceae and Solanaceae are in order Polymoniales (mainly floral characters). Animal order Carnivora includes Felidae and Canidae. Kuch similar characters wali families ka group. Convolvulaceae aur Solanaceae order Polymoniales mein (mainly flower ke characters). Animal order Carnivora mein Felidae aur Canidae.

Class

Includes related orders. Order Primata (monkey, gorilla, gibbon) and order Carnivora (tiger, cat, dog) are in class Mammalia. Related orders ka group. Order Primata (bandar, gorilla, gibbon) aur Carnivora (baagh, billi, kutta) class Mammalia mein.

Phylum

Classes like fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals share a notochord and a dorsal hollow neural system → phylum Chordata. In plants, the equivalent category is called Division. Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds aur mammals mein notochord aur dorsal hollow neural system hota hai → phylum Chordata. Plants mein isi level ko Division kehte hain.

Kingdom

The highest category: all animal phyla → Kingdom Animalia; all plant divisions → Kingdom Plantae. Taxonomists also use sub-categories for finer placement. Going up from species to kingdom, common characteristics decrease — so the higher the category, the harder it is to find relationships. Sabse upar ki category: saare animal phyla → Kingdom Animalia; saare plant divisions → Kingdom Plantae. Sub-categories bhi hoti hain. Species se kingdom tak jaate hue common characteristics kam hote jaate hain — category jitni upar, relationship nikalna utna mushkil.

1. Why are living organisms classified?1. Living organisms ko classify kyon karte hain?
Millions of organisms cannot be studied one by one. Classification puts them into convenient groups based on easily observable characters, so that (i) studying them becomes easy, (ii) each organism can be identified and named correctly, (iii) relationships among organisms (including evolutionary ones) are understood, and (iv) knowledge of bio-resources helps agriculture, forestry and industry. Millions organisms ko ek-ek karke padhna possible nahi. Classification unhe convenient groups mein rakhta hai taaki (i) study aasaan ho, (ii) sahi identification aur naming ho, (iii) relationships (evolutionary bhi) samajh aayein, (iv) agriculture, forestry, industry mein bio-resources ka gyaan kaam aaye.
2. Why are the classification systems changing every now and then?2. Classification systems baar-baar kyon badalte hain?
Because (i) new organisms keep being discovered, and (ii) new information keeps coming — cell structure, biochemistry, DNA/molecular data, development, ecology and evolutionary relationships. When new facts show that organisms are more (or less) related than thought, they are re-grouped to make the system more natural. Kyonki (i) naye organisms milte rehte hain, (ii) nayi jaankari aati rehti hai — cell structure, biochemistry, DNA data, development, ecology, evolutionary relationships. Naye facts aane par groups dobara banaye jaate hain taaki system zyada natural ho.
3. What different criteria would you choose to classify people that you meet often?3.
Possible criteria (book hint): dress, mother tongue, the state/region they live in, economic status. Others: age group, occupation, gender, relation to you (family, friends, teachers, neighbours), place where you meet them (school, home, market). Criteria: dress, mother tongue, rehne ka pradesh, economic status; aur bhi — age group, kaam (occupation), gender, aapse rishta (family, dost, teacher, padosi), milne ki jagah (school, ghar, market).
4. What do we learn from identification of individuals and populations?4.
Identification tells us exactly which species an individual or population belongs to, so we can (i) give it the correct scientific name, (ii) know its characters, similarities and differences with others, (iii) place it correctly in the taxonomic hierarchy, (iv) understand its relationships and variation within the species, and (v) use or conserve it properly (crops, medicines, pests). Identification se pata chalta hai ki individual/population kis species ki hai — (i) sahi scientific naam, (ii) uske characters aur doosron se similarity-difference, (iii) hierarchy mein sahi jagah, (iv) species ke andar variation aur relationships, (v) sahi use ya conservation (fasal, dawa, pest).
5. Identify the correctly written scientific name of mango: Mangifera Indica / Mangifera indica.5. 5. Aam ka sahi likha scientific naam: Mangifera Indica / Mangifera indica?
Mangifera indica is correct — the genus starts with a capital letter and the specific epithet with a small letter (printed in italics).Mangifera indica Mangifera indica sahi hai — genus capital letter se, epithet small letter se (italics mein).

A taxon is a unit of classification — a group of organisms at any rank (category) of the hierarchy. Examples: species – sapiens/Homo sapiens; genus – Panthera, Solanum; family – Felidae, Solanaceae; order – Carnivora, Polymoniales; class – Mammalia, Insecta; phylum – Chordata, Arthropoda; division – Angiospermae; kingdom – Animalia, Plantae. Even “plants”, “wheat”, “dogs” are taxa at different levels. Taxon = classification ki unit — kisi bhi rank par organisms ka group. Examples: species – Homo sapiens; genus – Panthera; family – Felidae, Solanaceae; order – Carnivora; class – Mammalia, Insecta; phylum – Chordata; division – Angiospermae; kingdom – Animalia, Plantae.
7. Identify the correct sequence of taxonomical categories: (a) Species Order Phylum Kingdom (b) Genus Species Order Kingdom (c) Species Genus Order Phylum7. 7. Sahi sequence: (a) Species Order Phylum Kingdom (b) Genus Species Order Kingdom (c) Species Genus Order Phylum
(a) and (c) are both in correct ascending order (some categories are skipped, but none is out of order). (b) is wrong because genus comes above species, not below. If only one answer is expected, (c) Species → Genus → Order → Phylum is the best, as it follows the order without reversing.(a) (a) aur (c) dono sahi ascending order mein (kuch categories skip, par ulta nahi). (b) galat — genus species se upar aata hai. Ek answer chahiye to (c) Species → Genus → Order → Phylum.

Meanings: (i) morphological species – individuals with fundamental similarities in form (used in NCERT); (ii) biological species (Ernst Mayr) – a group of natural populations that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, reproductively isolated from others; (iii) evolutionary/phylogenetic species – a lineage with its own evolutionary history. In higher plants and animals that reproduce sexually, the biological (interbreeding) definition works well. Bacteria reproduce mostly asexually (no interbreeding), so they are grouped by shared characters — shape, biochemistry, and especially DNA/rRNA similarity. Meanings: (i) morphological species – shape mein fundamental similarity; (ii) biological species (Ernst Mayr) – populations jo aapas mein interbreed karke fertile bachche dein, doosron se alag; (iii) evolutionary species. Higher plants/animals (sexual reproduction) mein biological definition chalti hai. Bacteria mostly asexual — isliye shape, biochemistry aur DNA/rRNA similarity se group hote hain.

(i) Phylum – group of related classes sharing basic features (e.g. Chordata: notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord); called division in plants. (ii) Class – group of related orders (e.g. Mammalia).
