Power transmission with step-up and step-down transformersउच्चायी और अपचायी ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर से शक्ति संचरणPower transmission with step-up and step-down transformers
NCERT Sec 7.8 · Class 12 Physics · Chapter 7 · interactive diagram
Parts and what they mean
- Generator at the power station (बिजलीघर का जनित्र) — Produces ac (see Chapter 6, AC generator).
- Step-up transformer (उच्चायी ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर) — Raises the voltage so that the current, and with it the I²R loss in the lines, falls.
- Long-distance transmission lines (लंबी दूरी की संचरण लाइनें) — For the same power P = VI, a k-times higher voltage means k-times less current and k² times less heating loss.
- Area sub-station (क्षेत्रीय उपकेंद्र) — Steps the voltage down near the consumers.
- Distribution transformer on a pole (खंभे पर वितरण ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर) — Steps it down further for houses.
- Home supply 240 V (rms) (घरेलू आपूर्ति 240 V (rms)) — The value quoted for mains is an rms value; its peak is √2 × 240 ≈ 340 V.
