Sound as compressions and rarefactionsध्वनि — संपीडन और विरलन
NCERT Fig 10.9, 10.12 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Oscillating piston (source) (दोलन करता पिस्टन (स्रोत)) — Forward stroke squeezes air (compression); backward stroke spreads it (rarefaction).
- Compression (C) (संपीडन (C)) — Region where particles are crowded — density higher than average.
- Rarefaction (R) (विरलन (R)) — Region where particles are spread out — density lower than average.
- Direction of propagation (संचरण की दिशा) — C and R move forward; the particles do not travel with the wave — energy is carried.
- Particle vibration (कण का कंपन) — Each particle only oscillates about its mean position, parallel to the wave → longitudinal wave.
