Parts and what they mean

• Observations (प्रेक्षण) — 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 17 (n = 8).
• Mean x̄ (माध्य x̄) — x̄ = 80/8 = 10.
• Absolute deviations |xᵢ − x̄| (निरपेक्ष विचलन |xᵢ − x̄|) — 6, 3, 2, 1, 0, 2, 3, 7 — signs are dropped, so left and right do not cancel.
• Mean deviation (माध्य विचलन) — M.D.(x̄) = Σ|xᵢ − x̄| / n = 24/8 = 3. Squaring the deviations instead gives the variance.
