Parts and their functions
- Capsid (कैप्सिड) — Protein coat made of small subunits called capsomeres (helical in TMV). Protects the nucleic acid.
- RNA (RNA) — Genetic material of TMV — plant viruses generally have single-stranded RNA.
- Head (शीर्ष) — Polyhedral protein head (capsid) of the phage, holding the DNA.
- DNA (DNA) — Bacteriophages usually have double-stranded DNA. No virus has both DNA and RNA.
- Collar (कॉलर) — Joins the head to the tail sheath.
- Sheath (आच्छद) — Hollow tail sheath through which DNA is injected into the bacterium.
- Tail fibres (पुच्छ तंतु) — Attach the phage to the bacterial cell wall.
