Parts and their functions
- Root cap (मूल गोप) — Thimble-like cover that protects the tender apex as it pushes through soil.
- Region of meristematic activity (विभज्योतकी क्रिया क्षेत्र) — A few mm above the cap; very small, thin-walled cells with dense protoplasm that divide repeatedly.
- Region of elongation (दीर्घीकरण क्षेत्र) — Cells elongate and enlarge rapidly — responsible for growth of the root in length.
- Region of maturation (परिपक्वन क्षेत्र) — Cells differentiate and mature.
- Root hairs (मूलरोम) — Very fine thread-like outgrowths of epidermal cells that absorb water and minerals.
