Parts and their functions
- Epiblema (with root hairs) (मूलीय त्वचा (मूलरोम सहित)) — Outermost layer; many cells form unicellular root hairs. No cuticle.
- Cortex (वल्कुट (कॉर्टेक्स)) — Several layers of thin-walled parenchyma with intercellular spaces.
- Endodermis (अंतस्त्वचा) — Innermost cortical layer of barrel-shaped cells with no intercellular spaces; walls have suberin as Casparian strips.
- Pericycle (परिरंभ) — Thick-walled parenchyma next to endodermis; lateral roots and vascular cambium (secondary growth) start here.
- Xylem (radial) (जाइलम (अरीय)) — 2–4 patches in dicot root; more than six (polyarch) in monocot root.
- Phloem (फ्लोएम) — Alternates with xylem; conjunctive tissue lies between them.
- Pith (मज्जा (पिथ)) — Small/inconspicuous in dicot root; large and well developed in monocot root.
