Parts and their functions

• Lipid bilayer (लिपिड द्विस्तर) — Mainly phospholipids; polar heads face outside, non-polar tails inside. Also cholesterol.
• Integral protein (अंतर्निहित प्रोटीन) — Partially or totally buried in the membrane.
• Peripheral protein (परिधीय प्रोटीन) — Lies on the surface of the membrane.
• Carbohydrate chains (कार्बोहाइड्रेट शृंखलाएँ) — Attached to proteins/lipids on the outer surface (glycoproteins, glycolipids).
• Cholesterol (कोलेस्ट्रॉल) — Lipid component in the bilayer.
