Parts and their functions
- Lamina (leaf blade) (पर्णफलक) — Green expanded part with veins and veinlets — main site of photosynthesis.
- Midrib (मध्यशिरा) — Middle prominent vein.
- Veins (शिराएँ) — Give rigidity and carry water, minerals and food. Network = reticulate (dicots); parallel = monocots.
- Petiole (पर्णवृंत) — Holds the blade to light; long flexible petioles let it flutter, cooling the leaf.
- Leaf base (पर्णाधार) — Attaches the leaf to the stem; a sheath in monocots, swollen pulvinus in some legumes.
- Stipules (अनुपर्ण) — Two small leaf-like structures at the leaf base.
- Axillary bud (कक्षस्थ कलिका) — Bud in the axil of the leaf; develops into a branch.
