Introduction
In geometry we learnt formulae for the areas of triangles, rectangles, trapezia and circles. These formulae are useful in many real-life problems, but they are not enough to find areas enclosed by curves. For that we need Integral Calculus. In the previous chapter we found the area bounded by y = f(x), the ordinates x = a, x = b and the x-axis while studying the definite integral as the limit of a sum. In this chapter we use integrals to find the area under simple curves, the area between lines and arcs of circles, parabolas and ellipses (standard forms only). Geometry mein humne triangle, rectangle, trapezium aur circle ke area ke formulas seekhe hain. Ye formulas kai real-life problems mein kaam aate hain, par curves se ghire area nikaalne ke liye kaafi nahi hain. Iske liye Integral Calculus chahiye. Pichhle chapter mein definite integral ko limit of a sum ki tarah padhte waqt humne curve y = f(x), ordinates x = a, x = b aur x-axis se ghira area nikala tha. Is chapter mein hum integrals se simple curves ke neeche area, aur lines aur circles, parabolas aur ellipses (sirf standard form) ke arcs ke beech ka area nikalenge.Geometry formulas cannot handle curved boundaries. Integrals can. We find areas under simple curves: lines, circles, parabolas and ellipses.
Simple curves ke neeche area
Consider the area bounded by the curve y = f(x), the x-axis and the ordinates x = a and x = b. We think of it as made of a large number of very thin vertical strips. Take an arbitrary strip of height y and width dx; then dA (the area of this elementary strip) = y\,dx, where y = f(x). This area is called the elementary area; it sits at an arbitrary position inside the region, given by some value of x between a and b. Curve y = f(x), x-axis aur ordinates x = a aur x = b se ghire area par sochiye. Hum ise bahut saari bahut patli vertical strips se bana hua maante hain. Height y aur width dx ki ek arbitrary strip lijiye; tab dA (is elementary strip ka area) = y\,dx, jahan y = f(x). Is area ko elementary area kehte hain; ye region ke andar kisi arbitrary jagah par hai, jo a aur b ke beech x ki kisi value se tay hoti hai.One thin vertical strip has height y and width dx, so its area is dA = y dx. This is the elementary area.

Similarly, the area A of the region bounded by the curve x = g(y), the y-axis and the lines y = c and y = d is found with horizontal strips: each strip has length x and height dy, so dA = x\,dy. Isi tarah, curve x = g(y), y-axis aur lines y = c aur y = d se ghire region ka area A horizontal strips se nikalte hain: har strip ki length x aur height dy hai, isliye dA = x\,dy.For a curve x = g(y) next to the y-axis, use flat horizontal strips: dA = x dy.
